Identity politics could destroy Malaysia’s ambition for unity, says Amirudin

Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari has expressed concern that identity politics could undermine Malaysia's goal of achieving national unity. In a recent warning, he emphasized that growing suspicion and prejudice stemming from identity politics could prove detrimental to Malaysia's ambition of becoming a united nation. Amirudin acknowledged that differences regarding religion, groups, and generations are inherent in a diverse society, but he cautioned against allowing these differences to fester and erode trust and unity.

At a Malaysia Day special forum, Amirudin highlighted that while differences don't automatically lead to division if handled fairly, maturely, and with mutual respect, they could turn into a significant challenge if allowed to expand unchecked without proper understanding. He noted that identity issues have become prevalent across multiple sectors, transcending political boundaries and infiltrating various aspects of society.

Amirudin urged for greater intergenerational understanding, urging younger Malaysians to comprehend the experiences of their predecessors while older generations must acknowledge the evolving perspectives of younger people. To achieve this, he emphasized that both age groups need to recognize each other's evolving viewpoints and experiences. The Selangor Menteri Besar stressed that the endeavor to forge a confident and cohesive nation remains ongoing and requires continuous renewal by each generation.
