I asked Gemini to order dinner, but Google's keeping that feature for itself

Google Home is set to introduce a new feature that will allow users to swap Gemini for other AI agents, such as Claude, or choose their preferred chatbot for controlling their smart homes. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) connector, which has been announced by Google, will enable users to monitor and control their smart homes through various AI chatbots or integrate them into agentic workflows. This feature will soon be available as early access to Google Home Premium Advanced in the United States.

In October, Google Home received a significant upgrade with the introduction of Gemini, a powerful AI model that enabled advanced functionalities like natural language queries through the Ask Home feature. Although this upgrade is not yet available, Google is expanding the AI capabilities of Google Home by integrating support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP). MCP is an open-source standard that allows AI models and chatbots to communicate with and fetch data from apps or services effectively.

With this new MCP connector, Google Home users will be able to access Google Home's information through various client apps, including AI chatbots like Claude, or utilize resources from Google Home in agentic workflows alongside Google's Antigravity, OpenClaw, Hermes, or other AI agents. This development is expected to enhance the versatility and functionality of Google Home, providing users with more choices and opportunities to customize their smart home experience according to their preferences and needs.
