Haze: 40 air quality stations record unhealthy API readings

Penang's air quality deteriorated to unhealthy levels across all four monitoring stations on September 16, with Minden recording the highest Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 167, according to State Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo. Balik Pulau followed with an API of 164, while Seberang Jaya and Seberang Perai registered API readings of 162 and 160 respectively.

Sundarajoo emphasized that the public should not panic but take precautions, especially those with respiratory issues, children, senior citizens, and pregnant women. He advised reducing strenuous or prolonged physical activities outdoors and seeking medical advice if symptoms like coughing, breathing difficulties, chest discomfort, sore throat or eye irritation occur.

Healthy individuals could continue daily activities while monitoring local conditions and API readings. The state government and agencies would continue monitoring air quality and coordinate with the Department of Environment for updated information. Industries, particularly in densely populated areas, were urged to reduce emissions, and the public was asked to avoid contributing activities like open burning and report any incidents to authorities. The government promised to provide updates based on information from relevant authorities.
