Govt to Introduce New System to Stop Electricity Theft

The federal government of Pakistan has announced plans to implement a transformer-level system aimed at curbing electricity theft and enhancing load management. Energy Minister Awais Leghari disclosed that this innovative system will enable authorities to deactivate individual transformers where electricity theft takes place, rather than shutting down an entire feeder.

At a press conference at Parliament House, Leghari announced that authorities intend to install the on-off system on 190,000 transformers spread across the country. He further stated that the regulatory framework for the system will be in place by April or May of the following year.

According to Leghari, this new approach is a method already being utilized by power distribution companies in various parts of the world. By targeting transformers affected by theft without disrupting electricity supply across the entire feeder, the system will allow for a more efficient management of power distribution. Leghari also addressed changes to the net metering system, emphasizing that these modifications have incentivized consumers to install batteries and alleviated the burden on approximately 300,000 to 400,000 consumers by shifting them to the remaining 35 million consumers.
