Gerindra Claims Parties Back 5 Pct Parliamentary Threshold

Gerindra Party Secretary General Sugiono announced that his party and coalition partners have agreed on a 5 percent parliamentary threshold for the General Election Law revision. Sugiono emphasized that public votes must be effectively weighed in elections, with the aim of reducing wasted votes. He views the upcoming electoral arena as needing to be more efficient, thus proposing regulatory thresholds to ensure optimal utilization of citizens' votes.

The proposed threshold of 5 percent was also agreed upon by the Golkar Party and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), according to Gerindra's Foreign Minister. Sarmuji, Golkar's Secretary General, stated that the 5 percent proposal serves as a middle ground to streamline the multi-party system while preventing wasted votes. He believes the threshold should not be excessively high, allowing for ideological diversity within the party system.

PKS President Al Muzammil Yusuf confirmed that his party supports the 5 percent parliamentary threshold, with the next steps to be determined by the relevant parliamentary bodies. The Democratic Party, National Mandate Party (PAN), and NasDem Party have proposed different thresholds, with PDI-P Chairperson Ganjar Pranowo stating that discussions on the threshold in the Election Bill must consider future political parties entering the elections.
