Fuel crisis: JI panel hails relief measures in meeting with ministers

Islamabad - A Jamaat-e-Islami delegation led by Liaquat Baloch met with Federal Ministers for Petroleum, Law and Justice, and Finance to discuss the government's relief measures amid a fuel crisis. The JI delegation welcomed the targeted relief for two- and three-wheelers and small cars, stressing the need for permanent solutions, such as reducing the Petroleum Levy.

They were briefed on the government's comprehensive steps to maintain fuel supplies and the petroleum pricing mechanism, which includes a seven-day rolling average-based pricing system. The delegation also heard about the comparative analysis of petroleum prices and fuel supply management in regional countries, highlighting Pakistan's better management.

Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik announced the government's targeted subsidy for bikers, two- and three-wheelers, and small cars, which is higher than the petroleum levy. He emphasized the importance of targeted subsidy over blanket subsidy, ensuring that support reaches those who need it most. The minister also mentioned the government's plans to upgrade refineries, which will enable the production of Euro-V compliant fuel, reduce the production of furnace oil, increase petrol and diesel production, lessen dependence on imported refined petroleum products, and potentially create export opportunities.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar highlighted the Prime Minister's priority to provide relief to the people, while Finance Minister Bilal Azhar Kayani discussed measures to broaden the tax base and promote direct taxation as part of efforts to strengthen the economy and improve revenue collection. The meeting also addressed broader energy security measures, consumer protection, and strengthening the country's petroleum sector.
