FRSC warns motorists against fake traffic offence SMS

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a warning to motorists and the public against fraudulent text messages claiming they have been recorded for new road traffic offences. According to a statement from FRSC's Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, the messages were being circulated through mobile devices and social media platforms, falsely portraying themselves as communications from the FRSC.

The messages create a sense of urgency, informing recipients of a new traffic offence and directing them to a website to review the details. However, FRSC has disowned this website, "frscgov.top/ng," stating it has no affiliation with the Federal Road Safety Corps. The agency warned that these messages could be used to obtain sensitive information from unsuspecting victims, urging them not to click on suspicious links or provide personal information.

Motorists who receive such messages are advised to preserve the evidence, avoid engaging with the senders, and report the matter through appropriate channels. FRSC emphasized that its official website is frsc.gov.ng and its contact channels include the national toll-free line 122. The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, has directed that members of the public be adequately sensitized about the fraudulent scheme.

The agency plans to collaborate with relevant law-enforcement and cybersecurity authorities to pursue action against those responsible. Nigerians are urged to follow the message "STOP. VERIFY. REPORT."
