FIFA says review of shelved investment plan to be presented to Council

FIFA announced on Thursday that it would present a review of its cancelled FFE proposal to the organization's Council, following criticism from Denmark's football chief, Jesper Moller. Moller had recently lambasted FIFA for failing to provide answers to "critical questions" about the abandoned plan during a Legal Committee meeting.

Launched by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the proposal aimed to sell commercial stakes in tournaments to external investors. FIFA Standing Committees, as per the organization's statement, advise and assist the FIFA Council in their respective areas, in accordance with FIFA's Statutes and Governance Regulations. The FIFA Council, comprising 37 members including Infantino, eight vice-presidents, and 28 members elected by FIFA's member associations, will review the withdrawn proposal.

The FIFPRO Europe has called for FIFA reform in response to Infantino's unsuccessful proposal, with multiple confederations, such as UEFA, AFC, and CONCACAF, advocating for changes to FIFA's leadership structure. The prospect of a no-confidence vote against Infantino was also debated. Some European national associations, including Greece and Germany, have since withdrawn their support for Infantino's re-election bid, highlighting a united European front.

Despite this, multiple sources familiar with the talks told Reuters that Infantino holds enough support to secure another term, suggesting opponents must change their approach and focus on limiting his powers. The FIFA presidential election, set for March 18, 2027, in Rabat, will see Infantino running for a fourth term.
