Farm data monitoring goes high tech with AI, satellites

The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) have signed a five-year collaboration to revolutionize agricultural data monitoring in the Philippines. Through this partnership, the agencies aim to harness the power of satellites and artificial intelligence to enhance various aspects of farming in the country.

Initially, PhilSA will provide satellite data and technical assistance, focusing on earth observation data acquisition, processing, and analysis. On the other hand, the DA will gather field data, validate satellite-driven assessments, and incorporate remote sensing, geographic information systems, and climate hazard monitoring into its agricultural programs.

A key aspect of the agreement involves the exchange and validation of maps and datasets related to crop production, irrigation, droughts, floods, and the consequences of natural disasters. By combining ground-level observations with satellite information, the government can make timely and precise decisions to mitigate agricultural damage, optimize irrigation planning, and safeguard food production against climate-related risks.

The collaboration could also extend to pest and disease tracking, soil condition assessments, fisheries monitoring, and pinpointing productive fishing and aquaculture areas. Furthermore, satellite data could be used to map floodwaters, identifying potential areas where excess water could be captured and stored for use during the dry season. In essence, these technologies might transform what was once considered a hazard into a valuable agricultural resource.

To ensure the accuracy and reliability of satellite-based assessments, the DA will mobilize field validators nationwide to conduct on-the-ground validation of the information. This collaborative effort between the DA and PhilSA marks a significant step forward in leveraging advanced technologies to bolster the Philippine agricultural sector.
