Exclusive-SK Hynix in talks with Intel about deal to make memory chips in US for the first time, sources say

South Korea's SK Hynix is reportedly engaged in exploratory talks with Intel to manufacture memory chips in the United States for the first time, according to multiple sources. The potential deal could involve SK Hynix leasing part of Intel's planned chipmaking facility in Ohio or forming a joint venture with Intel and major cloud firms, according to the sources.

Intel's shares experienced a 5.2% rise in pre-market trading on Wednesday, while SK Hynix's stock gained 4.1% in Seoul. However, opposition from Seoul could pose a significant hurdle to the talks, as the South Korean government is wary of the sensitive nature of some of the technologies SK Hynix could potentially produce. Intel has invested $100 billion in a chipmaking complex in Ohio, but delays have pushed back the start of production to 2030 or 2031.

Despite the costs, SK Hynix sees potential benefits in building a U.S. chip fabrication facility, as it faces pressure to supply more chips to customers and countries.
