ECOWAS court urges journalists to pressure govts on judgment compliance

The President of the Community Court of Justice for the Economic Community of West African States, Justice Ricardo Gonçalves, has called on journalists throughout member states to actively encourage their governments to adhere to the court's decisions. Speaking at the opening of a three-day training for journalists covering the court, Gonçalves highlighted the significance of journalists in raising awareness of the court's rulings and ensuring member states fulfill their treaty commitments.

He emphasized that, while the responsibility for enforcing judgments lies with member states, their current level of compliance is insufficient. Inaccurate and irresponsible reporting by the media has also contributed to gaps in coverage of the court's proceedings. The Community Court of Justice is the principal judicial body of ECOWAS, tasked with interpreting and applying regional legal instruments, promoting the rule of law, and safeguarding human rights.

To report on the court's activities accurately, journalists must thoroughly understand its mandate, jurisdiction, composition, structure, competence, practice, and procedure. The training, attended by journalists from ECOWAS member states, aims to enhance their understanding of the court's processes and improve the quality and accuracy of their reporting.

The event also seeks to foster a network of journalists specializing in judicial reporting, strengthen trust and cooperation between the court and media, and boost public interest in the ECOWAS Court's activities.
