DPP urges court to jail Obado and co-convicts as per the gravity of the offence

Nairobi, Kenya – The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has urged the High Court to sentence former Migori Governor Zachary Okoth Obado, former Personal Assistant Michael Juma Oyamo, and Caspal Obiero to death for the murder of university student Sharon Otieno and her unborn child. After a conviction for the crime, Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Gikui Gichuhi urged the court to consider the maximum penalty under Section 204 of the Penal Code, taking into account the circumstances and individual culpability of each convict.

While Sharon's parents requested a lenient sentence, the prosecution emphasized that reconciliation cannot erase the grave nature of the crime and must not influence the court's decision. The DPP argued against a non-custodial sentence, stating that such a punishment would not adequately reflect the gravity of the offense and the need for accountability, deterrence, and public confidence in the justice system. The court will sentence the three on November 27.
