Diver hospitalized after great white shark attack off Quebec’s Gaspé coast

A diver was hospitalized in Quebec after an apparent encounter with a white shark, according to the Canadian Coast Guard. The incident occurred off Percé, at the eastern end of the Gaspé Peninsula, around 10:27 a.m. The Coast Guard was alerted about the situation and paramedics were on standby when the rescue vessel arrived in Percé.

The local diving center, Plongée Percé, reported that the individual received immediate first aid before being taken to the hospital for further examination. In response to the incident, Plongée Percé has decided to suspend all diving activities for the remainder of the season as a precautionary measure. The Canadian Shark Attack Registry, maintained by the St. Lawrence Shark Observatory, notes that such occurrences in Canadian waters are exceedingly rare.

The observatory has recorded only 15 confirmed incidents in the registry spanning over three centuries.
