Different races, same road, shared humanity

Luke Chua, a wheelchair-bound participant in the Score Marathon in Putrajaya, demonstrated remarkable kindness and compassion on July 19. As he was halfway through the 30km marathon, he noticed a fellow runner, Zahidi Zein Lazim, struggling with cramps. Instead of continuing on as most participants did, focusing solely on their personal goals, Chua approached Zahidi to offer assistance.

He provided a cramp-relieving spray and helped him stretch his muscles, allowing him to continue the race. This act of helping a fellow Malaysian caught the attention of many, and the story of their interaction went viral on social media. For Zahidi, Chua's decision to help him was a powerful reminder of how sport can bring people together, transcending personal interests and fostering a sense of unity.

Chua, who has a spinal cord injury, sees his role as a reminder that the racial tensions often amplified online do not necessarily reflect the reality on the ground. He believes that the incident also highlighted the importance of supporting one another, regardless of one's background or circumstances. Chua's love for sport, which began after a spinal cord injury at 17, has led him to become a national para-athlete, competing in wheelchair basketball at Asean and Asian para competitions.

After retiring from competitive basketball, he turned his attention to marathons, finding joy in running alongside a diverse community. For Chua, the essence of Malaysia lies in the everyday interactions between people of different races, backgrounds, and abilities, sharing space on the same road without being divided by their differences.

He hopes to see more of this spirit beyond sporting events, as it reflects the true essence of Malaysian society.
