Democrats probe Russian-funded wedding parties for Donald Trump's son

Colombia's Ambassador to the United States, María Consuelo Araujo, presented her credentials to President Donald Trump on September 15. The White House protocol head, Monica Crowley, escorted Araujo to the Oval Office, where Trump awaited her. This appointment comes with the U.S. deadline to decide whether to maintain or change its certification of Colombia's efforts against drug trafficking.

Araujo, a finance and international relations expert from Colombia's Universidad Externado, was appointed after receiving government approval in August. The timing of her arrival is significant as Trump must submit a list of countries failing to meet drug control commitments to Congress. The political climate in Colombia has shifted since President Abelardo de la Espriella's predecessor, Gustavo Petro, was decertified by the U.S. in 2022.

Araujo's role includes advancing Colombia's "21st Century Patriota Plan," which aims to strengthen security capabilities, and working towards the country becoming a key security partner with the U.S. under the Shield of the Americas initiative.
