Constitution must remain supreme, says FCC CJ

Chief Justice of the Federal Constitutional Court, Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan, emphasized that the Constitution must always be the top priority when exercising power during a gathering at the FCC on Tuesday to kick off the 2026-27 judicial year. The event saw the attendance of FCC judges, the Registrar, Attorney General for Pakistan, Pakistan Bar Council officials, and legal professionals.

The Chief Justice highlighted that the Constitution is the "supreme expression of the collective will of the people" and that every institution created under it must be subject to its limits. He stated that during the past ten months, the court had made substantial progress in developing its judicial and administrative framework, establishing new systems, and expanding its reach to all four provinces.

In the initial stages, the court had to build everything from scratch due to the lack of existing infrastructure. The Chief Justice also mentioned that the court commenced its judicial work immediately after the oath-taking of all judges, without any extended period of preparation. Despite physical limitations, the court has continued to operate by relying on the commitment, discipline, and collective sacrifices of its staff.

The Attorney General for Pakistan underscored the significance of the FCC's journey and the importance of effectively adjudicating constitutional issues, protecting fundamental rights, and using modern technology to strengthen public confidence. PBC Vice Chairman, Pir Muhammad Masood Chishti, stressed the importance of constitutional stability, the rule of law, and the independence of the judiciary.

SCBA President Haroon-ur-Rashid expressed hope that the court would continue in its role of upholding the supremacy of the Constitution and reinforcing public confidence.
