Colombia’s Electric and Hybrid Cars Hit Record 50.6% Market Share

Electric and hybrid vehicles claimed a record 50.6% of new car registrations in Colombia during August, according to recent data. This marked a significant milestone for the country's automotive market, with the share of electric and hybrid cars more than doubling compared to this time last year.

Electric vehicles alone saw a remarkable 176% increase, with 4,542 units registered in August - up from just 1,647 in the same period the previous year. This surge in EV adoption comes despite higher initial costs, as charging remains cheaper than traditional gasoline fueling.

Hybrid vehicles also experienced strong growth, climbing 51.6% to reach 9,195 registrations in August. This represented 33.9% of the total new car market share. The combination of electric and hybrid vehicles now accounts for over half of all vehicles sold in Colombia each month.

While electric vehicles are gaining ground faster, hybrids remain more common among buyers, accounting for roughly one-third of all new cars compared to about one-sixth for pure electric models. The growth is not confined to Colombia's largest cities, with regions like La Calera, Tunja, Cucuta, Girardot, Monteria and Sincelejo also recording significant increases in August.

The expanding market for electrified vehicles suggests a shift in consumer preferences towards cleaner transportation options.
