Calls for the death penalty are growing louder: Mahumapelo

Supra Mahumapelo, Chairperson of the International Relations Portfolio Committee in Parliament, has expressed that there is a growing demand for the death penalty among South Africans. This is due to pressing issues plaguing the nation, particularly concerning a series of violent crimes. Mahumapelo was a panelist at one of the workshops held during the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary conference, where he addressed a question from a delegate representing Botswana regarding the application of capital punishment.

The conference, hosted by Parliament, gathered 800 Parliamentarians from various Commonwealth nations.

In response to the aforementioned question, Mahumapelo addressed the burning issues currently faced by the South African people. Over the past week alone, the country has witnessed the disappearance and murder of women in Kempton Park. He emphasized that the calls for the death penalty are becoming increasingly vocal from the public.

According to Mahumapelo, South Africa has established constitutional mechanisms to address these pressing problems. The fourth body discovered in Kempton Park on September 12 is believed to be that of a 38-year-old woman who was reportedly attacked while jogging. Formal identification of the victim is pending.
