Calcutta High Court fines building owner Rs 1 lakh for delaying demolition of illegal floors

The High Court of Justice has dismissed a petition from Shas, seeking to revive a government-funded conference in honor of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. The Religious Services Ministry informed the court that it could no longer proceed with the event planned for October 6-8 at Jerusalem's International Convention Center. The judges ruled that since the ministry had declared the conference cancellation, the matter had become theoretical.

Shas argued that moving the conference to a time after the 2026 election would undermine the link to the annual commemoration day, which falls on October 14. The ministry suggested holding the event earlier in October, but the attorney-general believed the event risked political campaigning due to its association with Yosef and Shas.

The judges did not rule on whether the attorney-general was correct in requiring the postponement. The conference was initially planned to include an interactive exhibition, a quiz about Yosef's rulings, and virtual-reality experiences. Despite these details, the petition has been dismissed, leaving unresolved questions about the timing and nature of the memorial event.
