Brewers' Class AA Biloxi Shuckers win playoff opener, with chippy end

The Biloxi Shuckers, a Class AA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, secured their playoff opener victory with a 6-3 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on September 15. This first-round win in the Southern League sets the stage for the Shuckers to advance to the Championship Series, provided they win their next two games, both at home, on September 17 and 18.

Biloxi hasn't reached this stage since 2019. The game was intense, with players and the umpire exchanging heated words. Reliever Ryan Birchard delivered the final out, celebrating with a lunge toward the Blue Wahoos' dugout. In the pivotal postseason matchup, the Shuckers emerged victorious in game 1 against Pensacola and will travel back to Biloxi for game 2.

It was a chippy and spirited contest, filled with confrontations and Ryan Birchard's fiery finishing touch. Pitching on his 22nd birthday, top prospect Bishop Letson held the Blue Wahoos to just one earned run in five innings, though he allowed six hits and three walks. Letson's ERA for the year stands at 4.85, but he finished strong with a 2.14 ERA over his last four outings.

Biloxi never trailed, with Damon Keith leading the charge by homering in the fifth off Jacob Kisting. Dylan O'Rea added an RBI single to make it 2-0, while Jesús Made and Matthew Wood further extended the Shuckers' lead. With the score 5-1, Dylan O'Rea doubled to score Jesús and Matthew, solidifying Biloxi's commanding position.
