Athletics Give Emotional Update on Player Who Suffered Life-Altering Injury

Athletics outfield prospect Ryan Lasko, 24, sustained a life-altering spinal cord injury during a collision with a teammate on June 30. The accident resulted in fractured C6 and C7 vertebrae, leaving Lasko paralyzed from the chest down. He was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery and subsequently admitted to a rehab facility in New Jersey.

Lasko's recovery has been remarkable, with him regaining sensation in his legs and arms. As of now, he can feel sensation from his feet up to his knees, and has also experienced involuntary leg movements. Additionally, he has regained some sensation in his thighs, hamstrings, and back. Lasko's left hand has about 75% functionality, while his right hand has approximately 50% functionality.

The Athletics expressed their support for Lasko, writing, "We’re with you every step of the way, Ryan!" Despite the challenges, Lasko remains optimistic about his future. He shared, "There's a lot more unknown, but I checked a lot of boxes. Everything that I said I couldn't do, I can do now." He even mentioned performing simple tasks like opening a water bottle, which were previously taken for granted.

As Lasko continues his journey to recovery, his next step involves outpatient therapy. He will continue to return to the rehab center as he progresses in his healing process.
