Apple OS 27.2 Betas Are Out; Version 27.1 Is the Duo-Exclusive iOS Fork

Apple has released the first beta of iOS 27.2 to developers for testing, marking a departure from the previous iOS 27.1 version. This unusual version numbering scheme is attributed to the iPhone Duo, which operates on its own distinct iOS fork, secluded from Apple's broader software updates. Upon its anticipated launch on October 23, the Duo will be equipped with iOS 27.1, while all other devices will transition to iOS 27.2.

The beta versions are slated to arrive in October as well, with the 27.2 releases following suit. Upon release, the versions will be aligned numerically: OS 27.0 versions released two days ago, iOS 27.1 exclusively for the iPhone Duo on October 23, and all OS 27.2.0 updates expected in late October. Subsequent 27.2.x updates will eventually bring the Duo into alignment with other devices, potentially by November or early December.

This scenario echoes a previous occurrence in 2010 when the iPad launched on iOS 3.2, an exclusive version unavailable to iPhones and iPod Touches. The convergence of versions across devices didn't occur until iOS 4.2 in November 2022, a delay of several months compared to the 2010 scenario. For the iPhone Duo, the version numbers are expected to converge within a month, as opposed to the eight months it took for the iPad in 2010.
