Anthropic: We need more time to be able to control AI

Anthropic, the AI startup led by Dario Amodei, has opened a new office in Madrid, Spain, as it seeks to expand its presence in the country's corporate market for artificial intelligence. The company, which already works with firms like Ferrovial, Amadeus, and Telefónica, aims to position Spain as a key part of its European strategy and a platform for growth in the Spanish-speaking world.

Cristina Pitarch, Anthropic's head of operations in Spain, highlights the weight of major Spanish companies, the dynamism of the tech ecosystem, and the strong interest in AI across sectors such as banking, telecommunications, infrastructure, and tourism.

Despite the growing competition with OpenAI, Anthropic emphasizes its focus on AI safety, which distinguishes it from OpenAI's consumer technology company. Pitarch acknowledges the industry-wide concerns about AI safety and admits that Anthropic has delayed some launches when it deemed insufficient guarantees. However, they may reconsider slowing down development if necessary.

The executive emphasizes that companies do not need to halt their AI deployment projects due to safety concerns, as today's AI systems are considerably different from those being developed in the labs today, which raise more safety concerns. Pitarch also mentions that Anthropic has postponed launches when there were insufficient guarantees and will do so again if needed.
