If Zuma's MK party is poised to gain influence in KwaZulu-Natal, will Durban's municipal government, eThekwini, welcome them in? The possibility has intensified after a recent high court ruling that could bolster MK's control over the province's R150-billion budget. The high court judgment was a result of ongoing legal battles surrounding KZN leader Mbali Shinga, a National Freedom Party (NFP) representative. MK's ally, Ivan Barnes, successfully argued for Shinga's continued position as Social Welfare MEC, even though she defied party orders. However, Shinga's lawyer plans to appeal the ruling, keeping her in the position until the appeal process.

MK's support in Durban is reportedly high, with an Ipsos poll indicating up to 55% backing. This puts the party close to gaining control over eThekwini, which boasts a budget of R70-billion. An MK victory in the upcoming local government elections may hinge on smaller parties, such as the EFF, who could potentially sway the outcome in their favor.
