Amazon Plans Same-Day Delivery Hubs Near 80% of US Prime Members

Amazon intends to expand its same-day delivery hubs throughout the United States, with the goal of placing them within 10 miles of 80% of Prime members by 2031, according to internal planning documents. The initiative, known as Project Mercury, will see Amazon invest $6.8 billion in same-day delivery capacity this year and next.

The company estimates that Project Mercury could generate $7.1 billion in economic value over a decade, achieve positive cash flow by 2030, and eventually replace spending on traditional delivery facilities. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that while the internal projections are preliminary and may change, the expansion of the same-day delivery network is a significant focus of the company's efforts to deliver faster and more conveniently for customers.

In 2025, Amazon reported a 30% increase in same or next-day deliveries to U.S. Prime members. By the end of the year, Amazon aims to offer drone deliveries in nearly 500 U.S. communities, marking a sixfold increase for its Prime Air service.
