Alicante Eye Specialist Presents Latest Surgical Research at London Congress

Alicante ophthalmologist Professor Jorge Alió showcased advances in corneal surgery and refractive treatments at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons' 44th Congress in London. The conference, held from September 11 to 15, brought together specialists to discuss scientific and technological developments in ophthalmology.

Alió, a Professor of Ophthalmology and an honorary researcher at Miguel Hernández University, presented on extended depth of focus lenses (EDOF), accommodative intraocular lenses, keratoconus, and therapeutic refractive surgery. He emphasized a shift towards personalized procedures and technologies to improve vision quality and treatment options for complex eye conditions.

Alió's research focuses on the Lumina accommodative intraocular lens, which he has studied for 14 years, and compared its performance against multifocal or EDOF implants in providing functional vision at various distances and reducing dependence on glasses. He also discussed the potential of accommodative lenses as an alternative for presbyopia correction, aiming to replicate the eye's natural focusing mechanism.

During Cornea Day, Alió presented research on keratoconus among people with Down's syndrome, including results from clinical trials using decellularised corneal tissue and neural crest cells derived from induced pluripotent stem cells. He also addressed difficult therapeutic refractive surgery cases and the importance of accurate diagnosis and treatment of ocular surface conditions to enhance refractive precision and surgical outcomes.

Alió is ranked seventh in The Ophthalmologist magazine's 2025 list of the world's most influential specialists in cataract and refractive surgery.
