AirPods 5: Should You Pay $20 More for the Wireless Charging Case?

Apple’s AirPods 5 launch adds wireless charging support, stem volume control, a Find My speaker for the case, and longer battery life to its $149 price point. The $129 model retains the same open-ear design and core features like H2 chip, Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, and IP57 rating. Both configurations boast the new H2 chip and AC/ANC/Transparency capabilities, but the extra $20 for the $149 model gains significant convenience benefits.

The $149 version includes USB-C charging and Qi-certified wireless charging, a Find My-enabled speaker that can emit a sound to locate the case, and stem volume control for adjusting audio without a paired device or Siri. Battery life also improves, with the $149 version offering five hours of listening with active noise cancellation and 22 hours with the case, compared to the $129 model’s four hours and 20 hours.

For users who prioritize convenience, daily control, and extended battery life, the $149 version is likely worth the additional cost. However, the $129 model remains the more budget-friendly option for those who charge via USB-C and prefer device-based volume adjustments.
