Agbodza cautions against public road shoulder parking; says action will be taken

Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza has warned drivers and heavily loaded vehicles against parking on public road shoulders as long-term solutions. He claimed that this practice endangers both safety and the proper utilization of public roads, particularly in urban areas where trucks with foreign license plates are left parked on shoulders for prolonged periods.

During an inspection of the 23km Takoradi-Agona junction road on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, Agbodza expressed his concerns. "You go round some cities and you see heavily-loaded vehicles with foreign registration numbers parked on the shoulders for weeks," Agbodza said. The minister announced that the Ministry plans to send a letter to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to treat such vehicles as trespassers on public roads.

They intend to collaborate with local authorities to take appropriate action against these vehicles. Agbodza also proposed designing designated parking areas for these vehicles and charging a fee for their use. Alternatively, he suggested constructing specific locations for them and charging a fee for parking. He emphasized the importance of keeping public roads and their shoulders clear to enhance safety and maintain accessibility for motorists. "As for the public roads, we need to clear them and keep them safe," Agbodza concluded.
