49ers rookie receiver De’Zhaun Stribling to miss about 10 weeks after undergoing ankle surgery

San Francisco 49ers rookie receiver De’Zhaun Stribling is set to miss approximately ten weeks following ankle surgery. The injury occurred during the team's season opener against the Los Angeles Rams last week. Coach Kyle Shanahan informed reporters on Wednesday that he opted for surgery for Stribling. The 49ers also placed backup tight end Jake Tonges on injured reserve with a knee injury, who will be sidelined for at least four weeks.

Tonges had a productive season last year with 34 receptions for 293 yards and five touchdowns. Stribling, the 49ers' top draft pick in the second round, was initially hurt early in the game against the Rams in Australia but returned to play 21 offensive snaps. However, he came off the field limping in the second quarter and was later ruled out for the remainder of the contest.

The 49ers were relying heavily on Stribling, especially after starter Ricky Pearsall underwent season-ending knee surgery. Stribling had 11 catches for 109 yards in his first two preseason games, which secured his starting role alongside veteran Mike Evans. His absence will likely provide more opportunities for Deebo Samuel, Demarcus Robinson, Jordan Watkins, and new tight end Brayden Willis, who joined the team from the practice squad.
