1,189 youths jailed for political goonism since 2022, Murkomen says

NAIROBI, Kenya – In the past two years, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has reported that 1,189 individuals have been convicted for offenses related to political violence and goonism, according to his testimony before the Senate. The sentences handed down by courts varied based on the severity of the crimes. Murkomen emphasized this figure as proof of government action against political unrest, particularly as there are growing concerns over the use of youths to disrupt political events and intimidate opponents before the 2027 General Election.

He stated, "This is part of the evidence for those who say that the police are doing nothing to arrest goons."

The government remains committed to combating political violence and persisting in pursuing individuals involved in criminal activities disguised as political mobilization. In August, Murkomen instructed the National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to adopt a preventive strategy by acting on intelligence before suspected gangs arrive at political rallies.

He urged security agencies to arrest suspected organizers before violence occurs rather than responding to confrontations at political meetings. Murkomen has repeatedly cautioned politicians against recruiting or deploying youths to cause disturbances at political functions, stating that those found facilitating violence will face legal consequences.

In July, he ordered security teams nationwide to intensify the crackdown on political goons and criminal gangs.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has also taken notice, warning of the threat political intolerance and hired groups causing disruptions pose to peaceful elections. The electoral agency pledged to enforce the electoral code of conduct against political actors involved in such activities. In Parliament, legislators have raised concerns over incidents in Homa Bay, Nyandarua, and Nakuru, calling for investigations into attacks on political supporters, civilians, police officers, and journalists.

Murkomen has previously defined goons as loosely organized groups that can be temporarily recruited for specific assignments, especially around political activities. He has also denied allegations of government involvement, asserting that security operations are conducted by the National Police Service.
