MCA President Wee Ka Siong questioned the government's approach to handling outflows of foreign funds from Bursa Malaysia after the stake of foreign investors in local equities fell to a record low of 18.1% in August. According to investment research firm MBSB Research, foreign institutional investors have been the main sellers on Bursa Malaysia for six consecutive weeks as of September 11.

In a TikTok video, Wee stated that the government needs to take concrete steps to restore the confidence of foreign investors and curb the ongoing outflow of funds. "We cannot continue to rely on domestic institutions and government funds to support the market while foreign investors keep leaving," he said. Wee reported that around RM640 million in foreign funds flowed out of Bursa Malaysia in the first week of September, followed by RM160 million more in the second week.

He believes that the outflow is not a new issue, as the total outflow of foreign funds from Bursa Malaysia has reached approximately RM84.5 billion since the general election 14 in May 2018 up to last week. He mentioned that RM2.3 billion in foreign funds flowed out in 2023, followed by RM42 billion in 2024 and RM22.5 billion in 2025.

As of September 11, he estimated that approximately RM5.3 billion in foreign funds continued to flow out.
