Volvo XC40 and EX40 emerge from second surgeon’s office visit
Volvo Car South Africa is yet to approve the facelifted XC40 and EX40 for the local market.
Volvo has introduced a second generation update to the XC40 and its electric counterpart, the EX40. The refreshed exterior features new Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, a redesigned front bumper, bonnet, wings, and alloy wheels ranging from 18 to 20 inches. The rear of the vehicles has seen enhancements to the LED light clusters, new tailgate, and bumper. A new grille is exclusive to the XC40, with both models offering a black styling package.
Inside, the XC40 and EX40 have been updated with a new dashboard featuring a tablet-style 11.2-inch infotainment system running the latest Google Android-based operating system. The steering wheel remains the same, but the center console now includes new decorative inserts, while the cabin has been improved with better material finishes and trim.
Both models also now come standard with the Automatic Emergency Braking system, a revised surround-view camera system with new radars and cameras, and a new Door Opening Alert feature. The semi-autonomous Pilot Assist system is now optional, along with a new Lane Change Assist system.
In Europe, the XC40 range offers two mild-hybrid powertrain options, both powered by a 2.0-litre Drive-E turbocharged petrol engine. The B3 model develops 120kW/265Nm and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 8.6 seconds. The B4 model has the same outputs but delivers 145kW/300Nm, with 0-100km/h in 7.6 seconds. The XC40 range starts at a price of R750,000, with no plug-in hybrid option currently available.
The EX40 range includes three models: the standard P4 with an 82-kWh battery pack outputting 150kW/420Nm, providing an all-electric range of 800km and a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.9 seconds. The P5 brings a 70-kWh battery with 238kW/420Nm, a range of 643km, and a 0-100km/h time of 7.3 seconds. The P5 Long Range variant offers 252kW/420Nm, a range of 804km, and the same 7.3-second acceleration.
The P8 model features an additional electric motor and an 82-kWh battery, delivering 408kW/660Nm, a range of 721km, 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds, and 205kW DC charging support. The P8 Performance model has even more powerful electric motors, with a total output of 442kW/670Nm, a range of 718km, 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds, and the same 205kW DC charging support. All EX40 variants are limited to a maximum speed of 180km/h.
