US Set To Approve $2.8 Billion Arms Package For Israel: Report

The US federal government is poised to approve a substantial arms package for Israel, valued at US$2.8 billion, according to recent reports from US media outlets. This package, funded by US taxpayer dollars, is set to include some of the most potent munitions in Western arsenals, including 40,000 one-ton bombs, marking one of the largest munitions sales in recent years.

The New York Times and the Washington Post have both covered this story, highlighting the inclusion of 20,000 MK-84s, 20,000 BLU-117s, and 20,000 I-2000 Penetrator warheads among the weapons being sold.

The decision to approve this arms package comes amid an ongoing munitions shortage within the US military, with stocks rapidly dwindling due to the prolonged conflict in the Middle East and the administration's commitment to spending US$22.3 billion on munitions between February 28 and June 30. The Trump administration's approval of the sale, reported by the New York Times and the Washington Post, was made in response to the urgent need to replenish the US military's arsenal, which has been significantly depleted by the war with Iran and the ongoing conflict in the region.

However, the sale has not been without controversy. Following the announcement, there were concerns over potential civilian casualties in Gaza, leading former US President Joe Biden's administration to block a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel. Yet, upon taking office in early 2025, the Trump administration swiftly reversed this decision, approving the shipment as part of the larger arms package.

The State Department spokesperson clarified that all foreign arms sales are subject to the appropriate process, though they refrained from commenting on pending transactions.
