UP Govt Plans Handloom Procurement For Hospitals To Boost Weaver Employment & Market Access

Lucknow, September 15 - The Yogi Government is set to introduce a groundbreaking measure aimed at uplifting the handloom industry and securing a reliable market for weavers. Efforts are currently being made to ensure a steady supply of handloom products to government hospitals, medical colleges, and other healthcare facilities. This strategic move will not only cater to the needs of the state's healthcare system but also bolster the economic well-being of weaver communities.

A crucial meeting was held on Tuesday, chaired by the Khadi and Village Industries, Silk, Handloom and Textiles Minister Rakesh Sachan, to discuss the procurement and distribution plan for handloom-made items. The focus was on securing bed sheets, gauze bandages, and other essentials used in medical institutions, aligning with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's guidelines.

Minister Sachan emphasized the urgency of finalizing the supply arrangement, urging officials to act swiftly. The government's goal extends beyond mere procurement; it seeks to provide weavers with consistent employment, a dependable market, and economic stability. By increasing the purchase of handloom products from local artisans in government settings, the initiative aims to inject new vitality into the weaving sector.

Under the proposed scheme, the Uttar Pradesh State Handloom Corporation Limited will handle the distribution of bed sheets, pillow covers, and gauze bandage cloth, ensuring the use of high-quality materials and adherence to established standards. The supply must be of superior quality and meet stringent specifications. Minister Sachan also stressed the need for expeditious decision-making and the prompt issuance of necessary guidelines.

Other key participants in the meeting included Principal Secretary Handloom and Textiles Anil Sagar, Special Secretary Sheshmani Pandey, Joint Commissioner P.C. Thakur, and senior officials from the Medical, Health, and Family Welfare Department.
