Unity minister condemns Umno assembly joke on Catholic clergy, urges authorities to act

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 — National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang has strongly condemned a joke made during the Umno General Assembly 2026 that targeted Catholic priests and nuns, warning that such behavior is unacceptable in Malaysia's multi-religious society. In a media statement, Dagang emphasized that jokes involving religious institutions, figures, holy texts or beliefs are never appropriate, regardless of intent.

He stressed that religion is not a subject for mockery, sexual humor, or exploitation for laughs. Dagang argued that freedom of speech does not permit anyone to disregard the religious sensitivities of others, and this principle should be applied consistently, irrespective of religion, race, status, or political affiliation. He called on relevant authorities to investigate the matter and take appropriate action, citing relevant legal provisions.

While noting the individual's willingness to apologize, Dagang hoped the incident would serve as a reminder for leaders and society to be more mindful when discussing religion and beliefs. He also connected the controversy to the fifth principle of the Rukun Negara, stating it as a fundamental value that promotes mutual respect and harmony in Malaysia's diverse society.
