UN thanks Thailand for peacekeeping service and sacrifice

Bangkok — The United Nations has expressed its gratitude to Thailand for its vital role in UN peacekeeping missions, with around 300 Thai military and police personnel currently deployed in three missions across the globe. According to UN Peacekeeping, Thailand ranks as the 33rd-largest contributor of peacekeepers to the United Nations.

Thai personnel are presently serving with the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei, the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), and the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The UN conveyed its appreciation in a Facebook post, recognizing the risks and challenging conditions faced by Thai peacekeepers.

Thailand has been a consistent contributor to UN peacekeeping operations since 1958, with Thai peacekeepers participating in more than 20 missions to date. Unfortunately, ten Thai peacekeepers have lost their lives while serving under the UN banner, as reported by UN Peacekeeping. The UN post honoring these fallen heroes commended Thailand for the service and sacrifice of its peacekeepers in conflict-affected regions worldwide.
