UK will 'heed the warnings' about AI risks, senior minister Louise Haigh to say

The UK government is set to acknowledge the warnings from AI experts regarding the potential risks the technology could pose, according to First Secretary Louise Haigh. Speaking at the TUC annual congress in Brighton, Haigh will affirm the government's commitment to working internationally to address these concerns, while also recognizing the technology's potential to revolutionize public services, bolster businesses, and foster scientific advancements.

In contrast to US President Donald Trump, who has dismissed AI-related warnings, Haigh will emphasize the importance of heeding the warnings of those at the forefront of AI development. She will stress the necessity of working with international partners to ensure public safety and national security. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds added that while the UK is a global leader in AI safety, the rapid pace of technological advancements is primarily driven by the US and China.

The Commons Business, Innovation, Science and Trade Committee has called for the AI Security Institute to provide evidence in Parliament on October 13, in response to growing public concerns about unregulated AI development. Meanwhile, President Trump has downplayed AI-related fears, dismissing them as a "hoax" and asserting that the US possesses a strong and capable leader to oversee the technology. He has criticized calls for greater government oversight from tech leaders such as Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk.
