TUC suspends strike over King’s College concession, gives govt two weeks

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has halted its planned industrial action at Federal Unity Colleges, following a meeting with the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, and other stakeholders in Abuja. TUC General Secretary, Mr Nuhu Toro, described the discussion as productive, stating that the unions' concerns were thoroughly addressed in good faith.

The suspension is temporary, pending a committee's report on the issues. The minister provided explanations on several concerns raised by the unions, leading to the stand-down of the action. However, the TUC can reconsider its position if the committee's recommendations fail to address their concerns. The government has welcomed the creation of the committee, which will review the relevant policy document and make additional contributions.

All Federal Unity Colleges have been ordered to resume academic activities immediately. The minister emphasized the government's commitment to further discussions with the unions and other stakeholders regarding King’s College management. The committee, comprising representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education, Labour and Employment, TUC, and KCOBA, has two weeks to submit its recommendations.
