Trump’s EPA Will Let Power Companies Unleash Unlimited Greenhouse Gas Pollution

The Trump administration has made a significant policy shift that could have devastating long-term consequences for the environment and public health. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it will eliminate limits on greenhouse gas emissions produced by power plants, including coal and natural gas facilities. This decision marks a major setback in the federal government's efforts to combat climate change, which could have enduring effects both environmentally and legally.

The administration is also proposing a separate rule that could prevent future administrations from implementing any restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. This move effectively ensures a future of ecological catastrophe, as it virtually guarantees the continuation of high levels of dangerous pollution in the atmosphere.

Vickie Patton, general counsel for the Environmental Defense Fund, expressed deep concern over the decision, stating that it will have enormous costs for the health, safety, and well-being of families across the country. The effects of climate change are already evident, with record-breaking heat waves, more dangerous floods and storms, and skyrocketing insurance costs.

Manish Bapna, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council, deemed the EPA's actions as ending its legal and moral responsibility to address climate pollution. The administration's proposal to repeal and replace regulations passed under the Biden and Obama administrations, coupled with new ones, has been in the works for some time.

Led by EPA administrator Lee Zeldin, the agency first proposed these changes last year, arguing that carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas emissions from power plants are not significant contributors to dangerous pollution or climate change.

This decision follows Trump's long-standing skepticism about climate change, which he often dismisses as a "hoax" and the "greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world." Upon taking office, Trump withdrew the United States from the Paris Agreement, an international treaty aimed at limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) to prevent irreversible damage to the planet.

The changes are likely to face strong legal challenges from environmental groups. The Sierra Club, for instance, vowed to fight the proposal vigorously through the courts, Congress, and communities across the country. Trump has consistently shown that he is a climate change skeptic, particularly in favor of the coal industry, which he has sought to appease in various ways.

Despite Trump's efforts to support the coal industry, it remains the largest source of global CO2 emissions, making it a clear beneficiary of the EPA's decision.
