TotalEnergies, Mistral team up on frontier AI for reservoir exploration

Cloud and data services provider Cloudera has teamed up with France-based AI laboratory Mistral to enhance AI capabilities for enterprises. The collaboration aims to ensure data is ready for AI deployment, a crucial step for successful implementation. Cloudera's hybrid data and AI platform will be integrated with Mistral's advanced AI models, enabling organizations to build, customize, and execute AI applications using their own data.

This partnership will support AI deployments across various environments, prioritizing the control of sensitive information. By running inference privately, organizations can process data within their own boundaries, safeguarding confidential information. Despite the growing interest in AI, Cloudera identifies a significant hurdle: a lack of AI-ready data.

In its 2026 Data Readiness Index, the company found that 89% of EMEA IT leaders have visibility into their data's location, but only 26% consider it fully governed. Warren Olivier, Cloudera's regional VP for Africa, notes that Gartner predicted in 2025, this data gap could cause 60% of corporate AI projects to fail due to inadequate data readiness.

AI expert Johan Steyn, founder of AIforBusiness.net, agrees that most AI initiatives fail not because of model issues, but due to data problems like fragmented, poorly governed, or siloed data. Cloudera emphasizes that the true value of this partnership lies in bringing frontier models to well-governed data without compromising control.

Abhas Ricky, Cloudera's chief business officer and GM for applied AI, explains that fragmented data can lead to additional context in prompts, while untrusted data may push teams towards more expensive models. Inefficient AI responses can result in retries, increased metered calls, and higher costs from AI agents. The EMEA data index reveals that 42% of leaders cite complicated access as their main obstacle to utilizing their data, with only a third having integrated data sources across environments.

Cloudera and Mistral's partnership addresses these challenges by enabling AI to operate within the enterprise's data perimeter, addressing regulatory, security, and operational concerns for enterprises in highly regulated and data-intensive industries.
