Tan Cheng Lock: father of the ‘Malayan consciousness’

Malaysian political figure and founder of the MCA, Tan Cheng Lock, is recognized as one of the first leaders to promote the idea of instilling a Malayan-centred political consciousness among the Malay Chinese population. According to academic Toh Chen Chun, Tan utilized his growing influence to argue for policy changes from the British towards their Malayan subjects.

In a speech during a 1920 luncheon with British governor Laurence Guillemard, Tan emphasized the need for all "sons of the soil," regardless of ethnicity, to take an active role in Malaya's welfare. His support for Malayans in the civil service led to his appointment as an unofficial member of the Straits Settlements legislative council in 1923, where he further unveiled his vision of a self-governing British Malaya with a federal government and Parliament in 1926.

Tan's efforts to foster a Malayan spirit and consciousness were an uphill struggle, particularly with the Malayan Chinese community. The "Laukehs" and "Sinkehs," comprising the first and later waves of Chinese immigrants, viewed Malaysia as a temporary place to earn money and return to China. Tan's challenge lay in convincing these communities to embrace his concept of a Malayan consciousness, particularly given his Peranakan background and limited knowledge of Mandarin or Chinese dialects.

Post-World War I, as Malayan politicians, including Umno founder Onn Jaafar, advocated for citizenship of all non-Malays born in Malaya, Tan argued that granting citizenship was the most effective way to divert China-born Chinese from focusing on Chinese national politics by offering them Malayan citizenship.
