Tamin Lipsey sues the NCAA in hopes of gaining a 5th year of eligibility

Tamin Lipsey, a former Iowa State college basketball player, is among several student-athletes who have filed a lawsuit against the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) seeking a fifth year of eligibility to compete. Lipsey, along with former Iowa State guard Jackson Paveletzke, filed the amended complaint on September 14, 2026, in the Monroe Circuit Court of Indiana.

The lawsuit, titled Stephen Daley et al. v. NCAA (Cause No. 53C06-2609-PL-002418), argues that the NCAA's "Five-for-Five" eligibility model, implemented on June 23, 2026, discriminates against college athletes who played four consecutive seasons without a redshirt year. The plaintiffs, represented by attorneys John William Richards, William Jonathan Beggs, and Ryan Hedley Downton, argue that the exclusion from eligibility for college athletes who entered college after the 2022 high school graduating class infringes upon their contract rights and deprives them of the opportunity to earn Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) compensation and generate institutional revenue.

The lawsuit also seeks to open the NCAA Transfer Portal for a week, allowing roster mobility for the plaintiffs.
