Sokoto shuts mosque, probes cleric’s controversial remarks

The Sokoto State Government has established a committee to probe the reasons behind the recent attack on Sheikh Musa Lukuwa Jumu’at Mosque in Mabera, Sokoto. The committee, comprising Islamic scholars, was formed to examine both immediate and underlying factors contributing to the religious tensions surrounding the incident. The government has also ordered the immediate closure of the mosque, currently treated as a crime scene, pending further investigation.

Abubakar Bawa, Director-General of Media and Publicity at Government House, Sokoto, stated that the administration distances itself from anyone who utilizes religion to demean or disrespect Prophet Muhammad, his family, or companions. Bawa called upon residents to demonstrate love and empathy towards the Prophet and refrain from inciting statements that could jeopardize communal harmony in the state.

Furthermore, the government pledged its dedication to safeguarding lives and property. This situation unfolded after an attack on September 11, wherein Lukuwa was stabbed twice in the neck shortly after delivering the Juma’at prayer at the mosque. The assailant, who was among the worshippers, was subsequently subdued and killed by other congregants.
