Singapore-based factory operator claims trial to reckless riding, hurting policeman

KOTA TINGGI: A 25-year-old Singapore-based factory worker, S. Hari Kumar, appeared in the magistrate's court today, charged with reckless and dangerous riding, as well as causing grievous harm to a police officer. Kumar pleaded not guilty to the charges, which were laid before magistrate Norkhalida Farhana Abu Bakar. He faced allegations under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, claiming he rode a motorcycle recklessly and dangerously on Jalan Yusuf at 10:03 am on September 13. The offense reportedly caused Corporal Mohd Fauzi Che Zakaria to suffer fractures in his right arm.

If found guilty, Kumar could serve up to five years in jail and pay a fine of up to RM15,000. Additionally, Kumar faces another charge under Section 333 of the Penal Code for causing grievous harm to Mohd Fauzi while he was fulfilling his duty as a public servant. The maximum sentence for this offense is 10 years jail and a possible fine.

The deputy public prosecutor, Wan Nuraini Shapee, requested bail of RM15,000 with one surety for the first charge and RM5,000 with one surety for the second charge. Kumar's defense lawyer, B. Mariammah, argued for a lower bail amount, citing her client's income in Singapore and the fact that he supports his parents. The court granted bail of RM5,000 with one surety for each charge and set a date of October 5 for further mention and document submission.
