Seven ex-Australian captains urge govt to raise concerns over Imran imprisonment

Former Australia captain Greg Chappell has spearheaded an appeal to Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong from seven former Australian cricket captains over the humanitarian concerns surrounding former Pakistan Prime Minister and 1992 World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan's treatment during his detention in Pakistan. The group, comprising Allan Border, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Kim Hughes, Mark Taylor, and Steve Waugh, has urged the Australian government to directly address the issue with the relevant Pakistani authorities.

They emphasized their stance was not political, but rather a plea for basic humanity in the treatment of any individual in detention. This appeal follows Imran's sons and sisters' public plea for months regarding his limited medical care, restricted family contact, and minimal access to legal counsel. The group's letter highlights Imran's condition as a cause for concern, contrasting his reported health in 2022 when Chappell last met with him—allegedly hale, hearty, and fit—to recent reports of deteriorating health.

The letter also references previous appeals to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in August, which they claim did not bring about the promised improvements. Chappell himself has been in contact with Australia's Foreign Minister, requesting a meeting to discuss the matter further.
