Scooters to SUVs drive India to a happy milestone

India's automobile sector recorded its highest-ever August sales in 2026, driven by robust consumer demand and strong performance in rural markets, according to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Passenger vehicle sales surged 36.5% year-on-year to 4,39,309 units, while three-wheelers and two-wheelers also saw year-on-year growth.

Domestic passenger vehicle sales increased notably to record 4,39,309 units in August, up from 3,21,901 units a year earlier. This growth was backed by a lower base from the previous year, with automakers offering lower prices to revive demand. Passenger vehicles led the growth in August, with utility vehicles being the key driver, rising to 2,50,084 units from 1,79,613 units a year earlier.

Within this segment, UV1 sales climbed to 86,935 units and UVC sales increased to 97,881 units. Passenger car sales stood at 1,12,011 units, while vans contributed 11,961 units. Resilient rural markets, improving financing conditions, and growing interest in alternative powertrains also supported the broader demand environment.

Three-wheelers also experienced broad-based growth, with sales rising to 93,764 units from 76,324 units a year earlier. However, electric three-wheelers saw mixed trends, with e-rickshaw sales falling to 1,264 units and e-cart sales declining to 500 units. Two-wheeler sales crossed the 20-lakh mark, with scooters providing a significant boost, rising 23.8% to 8,55,715 units from 6,91,430 units a year earlier.

Electric scooters with motor power above 250 watts contributed significantly to this growth. Motorcycle sales were comparatively steady, rising 2.4% to 11,33,047 units from 11,06,638 units. Overall, total domestic sales across passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, and two-wheelers reached 1.21 crore units during April-August 2026.
