Sabah, Putrajaya must focus on what they can build together, says Salleh

Former Sabah chief minister Salleh Said Keruak emphasized the need for Sabah and the federal government to focus on building a genuine partnership, rather than being defined by past issues. In a Malaysia Day message, he stressed that Sabah's rights and autonomy under the Malaysia Agreement of 1963 remain crucial, but should not result in distancing the state from Malaysia.

Salleh highlighted the importance of moving forward and exploring what can be achieved together. He called for a more developed and competitive Sabah, with enhanced education, healthcare, infrastructure, basic services, a robust economy, and greater opportunities for young people. Simultaneously, he stressed that Sabah possesses valuable assets for Malaysia, such as its natural resources, strategic position in Borneo, diverse cultures, rich biodiversity, and a skilled younger generation.

Salleh advocated for a genuine partnership between Sabah and the federal government, where both entities acknowledge their responsibilities and work together to deliver better outcomes for their people. He emphasized that a strong Malaysia necessitates a strong Sabah and Sarawak, and that the interests of the state and the federation should not be viewed as opposing each other.

Salleh concluded by stating that, despite differing opinions on various matters, it is essential for Malaysia's future that its citizens continue to shape and build the nation together.
