S. Korea's push for own capabilities not at odds with strengthening alliance with U.S.: DP leader

South Korea's push for greater independent defense capabilities does not conflict with its desire to strengthen the alliance with the United States, stated Kim Min-seok, leader of Seoul's ruling Democratic Party of Korea. This assertion came during a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Michelle Steel at the National Assembly.

Kim emphasized that the alliance should continue to grow stronger in the future. He noted that the United States has been a reliable neighbor throughout South Korea's journey of modernization, industrialization, and democratization. Kim firmly believes that South Korea's efforts to build its own defense capabilities are not at odds with strengthening its relationship with the U.S. At a policy speech in the National Assembly, Kim highlighted the necessity for Seoul to enhance its independent security capabilities, stating that the era of relying solely on Washington has ended.

Ambassador Steel underscored South Korea's pivotal role as a global player in fostering peace and prosperity in the region and worldwide.
