Rush to put Zverev in Alcaraz-Sinner tier premature despite twin titles

The ATP singles rankings were updated recently, causing a 24-year streak to come to an end. Novak Djokovic lost his top-10 ranking for the first time since 2018 after being eliminated in the first round of the US Open. Djokovic's exit marks the first time since October 2002 that neither he, Rafael Nadal, nor Roger Federer are in the top-10.

This has led fans to wonder if the "Big 3" era in men's tennis will finally come to an end. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have been compared to the "Big 3" as they have each won two grand slam titles, with their rivalry over the past few years resembling that of Federer and Nadal in the mid-2000s. However, questions remain about whether Alexander Zverev, who has claimed two grand slam titles this year, is worthy of joining the elite tier of men's tennis alongside Alcaraz and Sinner.

Zverev, who made it to a top-10 ranking in May 2017, has been a consistent performer throughout his career. He's spent 414 weeks as a top-10 ranked player, ranking second among active players in this metric, behind only Djokovic. Currently, Zverev has spent 102 consecutive weeks ranked inside the top 10 since September 2023. Despite this, Zverev has struggled to beat high-ranked opponents.

He owns a 5-18 record against fellow top-10 opponents in grand slam matches, and an overall win-loss record of 59-146 against top-10 opponents. When compared to Alcaraz, Sinner, Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal, Zverev's record against top-10 opponents at grand slams is significantly worse. Alcaraz has a 16-7 record against top-10 opponents in grand slams, while Sinner has a record of 14-14.

Even Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal have won over 60% of their matches against top-10 opponents at grand slams. This further questions Zverev's ability to join the elite tier of players.
