Protecting democracy takes centre stage in king’s speech

King Willem-Alexander opened his address to both houses of parliament on Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of protecting democracy. He stated that "democracy requires constant protection and maintenance" and highlighted that community spirit remains a vital antidote to polarization. The king stressed the need to view democracy as a unifying force rather than a tool to pit people against each other.

He emphasized the necessity of building confidence in the government's ability to address citizens' problems, expressing that the government and parliament should work together to provide more answers. The king listed several policy initiatives aimed at tackling pressing issues such as housing shortages, nitrogen pollution, public safety, and climate change, which had been neglected for too long.

He assured farmers that their concerns regarding livelihoods would be addressed, while acknowledging that delaying actions to reduce nitrogen pollution would be irresponsible. A pragmatic approach to the housing crisis, including increased use of prefabricated buildings, was recommended. Regarding the refugee issue, the king warned that threats and violence were unacceptable, noting that the recent protests at refugee centers were "worrying".

He concluded by stating that reasonable compromise is often more beneficial than persistent disputes, emphasizing the importance of reasonableness and compromise in maintaining democracy.
